How to Compress Videos on iPhone Without Deleting the Memory

When the video is worth keeping, deleting it is the wrong starting point. Compression saves a smaller version instead. Check the result before removing the original, especially for clips with small details, movement or difficult lighting.

Start with the videos that matter

Review the biggest files first, rather than compressing everything. In Swipellio, the Largest sort is available in the free basic modes and shows each item’s weight. Decide whether you want to keep the video, remove it or make it smaller. A clip you do not want to keep does not need compression.

How the compression flow works

Open a video card and choose Optimize video. You can inspect eligibility and estimated savings without Pro; starting compression requires Pro. The app processes the video on the device, saves a smaller copy and puts the original in its in-app Trash Bin. The new version is in your library while the original remains available in the Bin.

Review the smaller copy before removing the original

Watch the result, including fast motion, faces and dark scenes. Keep the original if the difference matters to you. A smaller file is a tradeoff: quality can drop slightly. Swipellio does not promise lossless video compression. Its release uses Balanced quality; it does not offer a choice of developer-only quality presets.

What happens to the resolution?

For source videos up to 3840 pixels on the long side, the source dimensions are retained, subject to even encoder dimensions. Larger sources are scaled down to that ceiling. Resolution and visual quality are different: retaining dimensions does not mean every detail stays identical. Do not use file size alone to judge the result.

Why some videos are unavailable

Not every source is eligible. Small files, sources with little expected benefit and unsupported formats can be rejected. Spatial and streamed videos are not supported by this replacement flow. If the original is in iCloud, it may need downloading; in Low Data Mode the app asks before downloading a video you start processing.

Where the space goes

Keeping both copies temporarily uses space. The original remains in Swipellio’s Bin until you choose to empty it. After that, check Recently Deleted in Photos too. Its contents can still occupy storage, and the iPhone Storage display can take time to update. The estimate shown before compression is not a guarantee of reclaimed space.

What is free and what needs Pro?

Reviewing videos, sorting by size, the basic swipe loop, the Bin and undo are free without a daily swipe limit. Video compression itself requires Pro. You can also choose a normal review session if you would rather delete unwanted clips than compress the ones you keep.

Check before deleting

A left swipe only moves the photo into the in-app Trash Bin. You can restore it until you empty the Bin; a double tap undoes the last swipe. After deleting from your library, check Recently Deleted in Photos too. Permanently deleting from there cannot be undone.

With iCloud Photos enabled, deleting also syncs to other devices on the same account. Keep a separate copy of important memories before permanently removing them.
